This fall, the University of Michigan unveiled a groundbreaking academic opportunity for high school seniors: a streamlined, fully integrated dual-degree program that allows students to simultaneously pursue a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and a Bachelor of Business Administration at the Ross School of Business. This "Integrated Business and Engineering at Michigan" program marks a bold step forward, positioning the university at the forefront of interdisciplinary education.
This joint degree is designed for driven students aiming to thrive at the convergence of technology and business. Michigan has responded to the changing demands of modern industries where technical acumen paired with business savvy is increasingly essential—not just nice to have.
What Is the Dual-Degree Program?
Starting with the fall 2026 cohort, students applying via the Common App can select this dual-degree option, merging two of U-M’s highest-ranked schools—Michigan Engineering (#5) and Michigan Ross (#4) according to U.S. News & World Report (2025). Unlike previous arrangements where students could complete both degrees over time, this new pathway offers an integrated, cohort-based experience with intentional alignment across disciplines. The initial cohort is expected to be between 60 and 100 students.
Student Experience & Structure
The program is designed to be completed in four years, combining rigorous coursework with practical, action-based learning opportunities. Graduates will receive two full degrees—one from Ross (BBA) and one from Michigan Engineering (BSE)—in their respective fields (18 engineering majors are available).
The new integrated program is designed for four years through coordinated scheduling, early exposure to both curricula, and careful advising. It is anticipated that the typical student applying to the dual-degree program will already have AP/IB credits and/or dual- enrollment credit for college courses. Some students without AP/IB credit or with heavy lab majors may need summer courses or a ninth semester, but the four-year plan is now the default.
Admissions & Application Details
Students will apply via Common App directly into the dual-degree track. Applicants must select the Ross School of Business as their first-year unit on the Common App and choose the "Business and Engineering integrated dual degree" track. Applicants must submit all Ross supplemental materials, including required essays and the Ross Admissions Portfolio via SlideRoom. Applicants must meet the admissions standards for both Ross and Michigan Engineering.
CAUTION: If you apply to this dual-degree program and are not accepted, that means you are not admitted to the University of Michigan at all. There is no fallback that you are admitted to only Ross or only Engineering.
Early Decision vs. Early Action vs. Regular Decision
As was recently announced, for the first time, the University of Michigan is offering Early Decision (ED). ED is available for those students applying to the Integrated Business and Engineering program. Early Action (EA) and Regular Decision (RD) are also available for this program. Deciding whether to apply ED, EA, or RD is a major decision that involves many important considerations.
Other Possible Paths to Consider
Students who are interested both in Michigan Engineering and Michigan Ross should consider other possible paths. For example, a student could apply to Michigan Engineering with a Ross preferred admit. Another possible path is to apply to Michigan Engineering and once attending U of M apply for a Ross Minor. And there are other worthwhile ways to get both a Michigan Engineering and Michigan Ross degree.
Final Thoughts
The Integrated Business and Engineering dual-degree program reflects a growing national trend: universities designing integrated, interdisciplinary degrees to meet evolving industry demands. STEM-plus-business skill sets are becoming a premium currency in the job market. This dual-degree program at U-M is a bold, forward-looking academic pathway for students ready to excel in both technical innovation and business leadership. With careful application strategy—choosing the right decision plan and understanding the demands—you can position yourself at the intersection of two elite programs and two powerful alumni networks.
